Pizzo - 2023

The Pearl Of Calabiria

Pizzo is in the province of Vibo Valentia in Calabria. The town, which has just over 9,000 inhabitants, is located on a cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The town is alive with schools, butchers, bread shops, fishmongers, greengrocers, a number of larger grocery stores, etc. And in the middle of the old town (Centro Storico) is the piazza (Piazza della Repubblica).

The southernmost region in Italy is Calabria, the "foot of Italy", surrounded by the Ionian Sea to the east and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. The western coast has long been called the "violet coast" due to the color of the sea, but also the Costa Degli Dei, which means "Coast of the Gods".

Pizzo has two major tourist attractions, the castle Murat and the cave Piedigrotta. Murat Castle is located at the end of the piazza with a view of the sea. Joachim Murat was executed in the castle in 1815. In addition to being Napoleon's brother-in-law (married to Napoleon's youngest sister), he was King of Naples. Piedigrotta is a church in the mountain and if the legend is to be believed, the origin of the whole thing is a ship that capsized against the rocks. The cave contains a variety of religious sculptures carved into the rock.

Thanks Bengt & Lena for renting your amazing Penthouse. In short, this was a wonderful place. Specially the top of the house, the sea view (Tyrrhenian Sea), just amazing.

What's best with Pizzo?

Well.. Pizzo himself might not be convinced, but, the proximity to all the places of Calabria makes the city a good strategic place to start from.
